Near the end of his life, Vincent van Gogh moved from Paris to the city of Arles in southeastern France, where he experienced the most productive period of his artistic career. During his 444 days there, he completed over two hundred paintings and one hundred drawings inspired by the region's light, wildlife, and inhabitants.

Van Gogh arrived in Arles by train from Paris on 18 February 1888. It was a revelation. He loved how the light was so brilliant, even in the middle of winter. What a contrast to the greyness of northern Europe. The flat surrounding Camargue landscape must have reminded him of his native Holland. But he was also immediately fascinated by Arles.

The courtyard of the former Arles Hospital, now known as "Espace Van Gogh," is the subject of this painting. The vantage point is from Van Gogh's room. The garden is well maintained and just as vibrant today as it was more than 100 years ago. Flowers featured in the painting include irises, pansies and poppies.

By the end of March 1889, Van Gogh had reconciled himself to the fact that he was unable to live alone, and through correspondence with his sister Wilhelmina and Theo it is clear that he had a partial understanding of his condition. At the very least he was aware of his inabilities and tendencies towards self-harm, writing to his sister.

Van Gogh painted this woman while staying in the Carrel hotel in the southern French city of Arles. It is probably Elisabeth Garcin, the hotel owner's mother-in-law. She was 68 years old at the time. The knotted black kerchief on her head was a typical part of a widow's mourning dress. Part of a bed can be seen in the background. Throughout his life, Van Gogh liked to paint things and people.
